John Young Noel, 1796-1797.

This collection consists of letters, resolutions, and a state act relating to the Savannah fire of 1796. Included are an act to contribute relief to Savannah from the General Assembly of Pennsylvania, a letter from Noel to an unknown addressee regarding payment due him and the relief of sufferers from the fire, a letter from Noel to Representatives for Chatham County, Georgia, in the Georgia Legislature regarding the relief of fire sufferers and enclosing a memorial of the Citizens of Savannah, a resolution of the city County calling a meeting to plan for relief, and a letter from Noel to the citizens of New York asking for aid. Joseph Clay, John Habersham, and Thomas Young are mentioned in the last letter.

John Young Noel (1762-1817) was born in New York. He practiced law in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, where he married Sarah C. Dennis Stites, widow of Richard Stites and mother of Richard Montgomery Stites. The family moved to Savannah where Noel became a distinguished member of the bar. He was a Judge of the Courts in Upper Georgia prior to 1789, Judge of the Eastern Circuit, 1807, Mayor of Savannah, March 1796 - July 1797 and 1804-1807, and Alderman of Savannah, 1798-1799 and 1804-1807. ...
